They'll find out how how weak he really is someday and he can't bear the thought. He doesn't want to disappoint everyone who has, so foolishly, placed their faith in him. And he's so very tired of pretending to be strong. Notes: Depression is slightly different in that I can't tell all of the story from Tony's perspective, not if I want to get the whole thing across (because people who visit the bottom of the well regularly don't always realize exactly how bad/weird it is from the outside because they get wrapped up in their own heads in ways that are hard to explain unless you've been there). There will be glimpses from Steve's eyes, possibly among others. Also please please please heed the warnings! There's self-loathing here to the nth degree, a suicide attempt (later), and a bunch of other nasty emotional things. Also, you may want to read the previous two parts to this. You can probably get by all right without them, but there are and will be lots of references to shit that happened before. So yeah.

"Right," Rhodey says dryly, "because you spend every waking minute in the lab when you're in a mood like this, instead of drinking and chasing skirts." "And pants." Tony gives Rhodey a pleased-with-himself smirk. He's not even going to deny that he's in a mood (because he is; he's learned to recognize the signs over the years and how to cope with it). "Don't forget I chase pants, too." Rhodey rolls his eyes. Notes: The last two sections are gonna be Steve/Tony, so if that ain't your bag, this is last call for alcohol gen (such as this has ever been gen).

He gets used to waking up and feeling sick with gritty eyes, gets used to seeing nasty bags under his eyes in mirror (he gets pretty good at covering them with makeup) and his limbs feeling like they weigh a metric ton and being barely in his control when he gets out of bed, gets used to minor hallucinations (little things in the corner of his eye, the occasional noise he knows isn't real). Notes: A couple things: this is mortalfool's prompt from avengerkink (the gist of which is "Tony is bipolar. Go!"). Tony has type II bipolarism (the lesser known version) and this is what happens when you put a type II'er on certain kinds of anti-depressants without the protection of a mood-stablizer. Only Moreso is half of Mark Vonnegut's memoir's title, Just Like Someone Without Mental Illness, Only Moreso, which is about surviving a much more difficult variety of the illness.
